In fact, according to the Canadian Association of Optometrists, 1 in 7 Canadians with 20/20 vision will still develop a serious disorder of the eye. During an eye exam, your optometrist will assess your eye health including eyelids, cornea, iris and lens. They will look inside your eyes, and the pressure in your eyes may be checked to screen for glaucoma. A visual field test may be done to check central and peripheral vision. Your optometrist will also check how well your eyes work together, focus near and far, and do visual tests. They will also monitor for conditions such as:

• Glaucoma
• Cataracts
• Macular Degeneration
• Other disorders of the retina

Infants: by 6 months old
Preschoolers: at age 3 and again before school
School age: every year
Adults: every 1 to 2 years
Age 65 and older: every year

Your optometrist will discuss your suitability for contact lens correction. This assessment is part of your total eyecare visit, and there are many factors that need to be considered. These days, there are plenty of convenient and healthy choices when it comes to contact lenses. Your individual vision needs can likely be met with one of the types of lenses available today.
